Once your patient walks out of the office door, it will be one hundred, seventy-nine days or so until you see them again. Motivating a patient to look after their teeth during that time can be one of the most difficult things to do. Helping Dentists and Hygienists teach their patients effective personal oral hygiene has been our core business for over fifty years. Effective personal oral hygiene has to be taught, and nobody has a better chance at being successful than the dental team. Improperly used, a toothbrush and dental floss can be nothing more than a time waster. Proper personal oral hygiene on the other hand will effectively prevent caries and gum disease. Developing the mind set and skills to master the Bass Method is easy. POH has the experience.

You May Remember These From Your Childhood Plaque disclosing tablets will certainly get a patients attention. Like a bright red road map to where their bugs live. Swishing one of these around, inspecting in a brightly lit mirror and explaining to a patient that the remaining red stain is where they missed will help to aim their efforts. No guess work, clean off the red. Simple. Effective.
A Little Bit of History POH has been supplying toothbrushes and dental floss to preventive dental offices all over for more than fifty years. POH using dental offices know that preventing disease is preferable to suffering from it and that their patients' teeth are precious. The ability to teach a patient how to prevent the diseases known as tooth decay and gum disease is profound. Today there exists a large group of dedicated, POH-using clinicians who prefer to never again fill another cavity. Prevention is paramount.
Robert Jones, D.D.S., the founder of POH, had a rather unique method of patient motivation. Turns out, it built his practice better than anything before. CLiCK

Percept® BLACK FLOSS |
|
|
All Dental Flosses Are Not The Same The construction of POH dental floss is based on clinical efficacy in disrupting plaque, or what Dr. Bass used to call 'Material Alba'. POH floss is not designed for ease of assembly in a factory, or to slide over problems on teeth. Each spool of POH dental floss is hand assembled and inspected. Made here in Tulsa.
The exceedingly fine, multi-filament design of POH dental floss acts as a cutting edge to slice through plaque very well, and together with hundreds of other filaments POH floss entraps and removes the loosened material.
Cosmetic and aesthetic dental practices use our floss as a diagnostic to check margins and restorations to ensure all their work is perfect.
Seeing Is Believing Percept® Black Dental Floss - One of the best teaching aids to show a patient the good they are doing. Percept® visually contrasts with plaque, which allows a patient to see the results of their efforts and is a powerful and positive reinforcement.
Plus, Percept® does not readily show any blood from debridement, which tends to alarm a new flosser enough they quit trying.
|
Simple & Effective POH toothbrushes adhere to the specifications outlined in Dr. Bass' work. POH toothbrushes use the highest cost, best quality Dupont Tynex® soft nylon for the bristles, then we carefully polish the tips of each bristle. Both end rounding and soft bristles were innovations to the toothbrush market and one of two reasons POH was started. The bending strength and thickness of the nylon bristles, the length and the diameter are carefully controlled. All this to ensure that the toothbrush is as perfect as can be.
The POH handle is designed to ensure that the fine motor skills used in the Bass Method are not lost, and to also to make sure that too much leverage is not imparted. Held with the fingertips, not a fist, proper manipulation of the POH toothbrush is easy and gentle.
Dr. Bass said that "There is no good excuse for crooked, twisted or other distorted shapes of toothbrush handles." POH remains true to his reasoning.
Sometimes Less Really IS More Tightly spaced bristle tufts are good enough for the broad surfaces of the enamel. To really apply the tips of the bristles to the sulcus and the cusps of a patients dentition, having the bristle tufts spaced a little apart allows gentle and safe disruption and disorganization of bacterial plaque. POH offers a variety of bristle tuft layouts that offer a choice for all your patients.

Dr. Patricia H, Atlanta: "Fell in love with this floss at a CE given by a periodontist".
Regina B., RDH, Dunedin FL: "I was first introduced to POH floss at the dental school for hygiene that I was attending back in 1976. I have been using for myself and recommending your POH floss to all of my many patients, hundreds of patients ever since!! Love Your Floss!!"

Polishing the tips of each of the bristles in a toothbrush is a POH hallmark. We polish the bristle tips and routinely inspect them under magnification. This ensures that the end-rounding is as perfect as we can make it. We know this is important because that is the part of the toothbrush that does the work.

It has been many years since someone bent the neck of a toothbrush, presumably to increase sales. After the bent neck came the thumb stop, the multiplastic handles, tongue cleaner, etc. One can easily pay a couple of hundred dollars for a toothbrush nowadays.
POH first did the Ridicula ad maybe a decade ago. By pointing out the obvious, many clinicians rethought their ideas on toothbrush efficacy. Is a quarter pound toothbrush really necessary? No. "Ergonomic"? Depends on your definition. POH thinks so.
The POH toothbrush handle design is based on research written about in "The Optimum Characteristics of a Toothbrushes for Personal Oral Hygiene" by Charles C. Bass, MD. HERE
In the paper Dr. Bass states: "A plain straight handle design can be used more successfully and more effectively than any other. There is no good excuse for crooked, twisted or other distorted shapes of toothbrush handles."
The POH toothbrush maintains the simplicity inherent in Dr. Bass’ design. Gentle and effective disruption of bacterial plaque is the result of his research. By the way, Dr. Bass' work is the most recent POH can find on the subject, that was not, one way or another, paid for by commercial interests. www.PersonalOralHygiene.net
Besides, the most important part of any toothbrush are the bristles. Did we mention we use the very best Tynex® nylon that Dupont can make?
POH uses Tynex® for these reasons:
- Dupont invented nylon, their knowledge of the material is unsurpassed.
- Tynex® takes the polish we give the bristle tips.
- It is hydrophobic.
- This nylon is consistently round and uniform.
- Dupont Tynex® is extremely durable.

POH knows that in truth, EVERY month is children’s dental health month to Dentists and Hygienists around the USA.
Dr. Robert Jones, the founder of POH, was his most persuasive with children. Doc had the old-timey pulley driven dental drill, which if you never saw one, can best be described as the thing you would design if you wanted people to be afraid of a dentist. It had long thin arms of steel with pulleys on the ends, and had brown rubber band like cords that went from one pulley to another until you got to the hand piece. Doc would twist a cotton ball onto the longest, top pulley cord, fashion a rabbit looking puff with big ears and he would tell the child “I want you to meet Mr. Hopper”. This would cause the child to look up agreeably. Then, Doc would say in his best story telling voice, “Now Mr. Hopper is going to start moving, and I want to see if you can follow him with only your eyes and keep your head still.” Doc would step on the pedal, and the pulleys would start to turn, and sure as heck Mr. Hopper would start moving slowly along the pulley line, and around the corner and back, over and over. Then, Doc would tell the little one that “Mr. Hopper is about to be scared by something, and he is going to run real fast!” And sure enough, the pedal would go down, Mr. Hopper would take off round and round the pulleys, and the child would be bobbing back and forth in the chair with Doc swaying in time with the kids teeth, doing his work, and all the while looking like it was the easiest thing in the world to do.

Medicine, not marketing
There are dental offices around the world who have succeeded in teaching their patients how to clean and keep their teeth for life. In those patients who diligently carry out their personal oral hygiene every night before bedtime, the result is improved oral health and true, effective prevention of dental disease. Those offices taught their patients the Bass Method of personal oral hygiene and used POH toothbrushes and dental floss. What is more, offices like those have been doing so since 1961. POH believes in Dr. Bass, his method of personal oral hygiene and our track record so much we want to share it.
Telling a patient to brush and floss is one thing. Showing them the best way to do those things is better. Giving a patient a valid and lifelong reason to perform their personal oral hygiene on a daily basis is a different endeavor entirely. Thousands of Dentists and Hygienists over the last fifty plus years have successfully developed a concord with their patients, instilling in them the knowledge of personal oral hygiene. Your patients depend on you to teach them how to care for their teeth.

The POH challenge for 2014 for you is to pick thirty six of your patients whose oral hygiene habits are non-existent. Surprise those patients with a POH toothbrush, dental floss and disclosing tablets, purchased just for them.
Order our eRDH NCDHM2014 Special today. Our offer includes: 72 toothbrushes, 36 spools of floss, 360 disclosing tablets. Half off list price. Limited quantities available, first come, first served.
Per patient that is equal to: Two toothbrushes, one #4 and one #3. The #4 starts a patient with the full, firm feeling head that most patients are used to, but using POH soft bristles. The #3 is the toothbrush to move patients to, once they get the muscle memory and habituated actions of the Bass Method. One 100 yard spool of LiteWax™ Classic dental floss. LiteWax™ to start. After getting used to the multifilament floss and the method, a patient should progress to the NoWax™. Ten disclosing tablets. To be able to actually see where the plaque is, or where it has been missed.
All that, just for your patients. For you, we want to share the original paper on teaching the Bass Method, written by Dr. Bass with help from Dr. Coker both of Tulane University. Now is your chance to teach the Bass Method, in the manner and format it was intended. If you think you know Bass, you may be surprised.

"Dr. Charles C. Bass created a simple method enabling virtually everyone to enjoy a lifetime of perfect dental health: Brush and floss correctly with his toothbrush and dental floss once a day before retiring to bed. The dental establishment refused to endorse his methods during his lifetime, but dentists across the country made pilgrimages to his New Orleans office to learn his method of preventive dentistry. This book tells the story of this country doctor who excelled as a physician, a researcher, an educator and a dental pioneer."

WHAT YOU NEED The size, shape and mass of the POH toothbrush handle is optimized for gentle and precise control. The length and diameter of our bristles are designed to be effective in gently cleaning the gingival crevice and the pits and fissures of a tooth, hard to get areas where cavities form. POH uses the highest grade Dupont Tynex® nylon for our bristles.
The handle of the P.O.H. toothbrush is the most obvious difference one sees when compared to the commercial offerings available today. Most commercial toothbrushes are bulky, and seem designed to be held with a closed fist. Our straight handle and trim toothbrush is typically shorter and lighter by design. Patients should hold a P.O.H. toothbrush with their fingertips for precise, gentle and effective control. If a toothbrush handle is too long, one gets too much leverage. If the handle is too bulky, the fine motor skills used in the Bass Method are lost.
We consider polishing bristle tips our hallmark. We polish our bristle tips after they are inserted into the handle and routinely inspect them under magnification to ensure end-rounding is as perfect as we can make it.
Dr. Bass demonstrated in his research the benefits of using the .007” nylon bristle filament and effectiveness in cleaning the gingival crevice, pits and fissures of the teeth. Dr. Bass tried larger diameter nylon, thinner diameter nylon, longer bristles and shorter bristles, finally settling on .007" diameter. POH offers an even softer, thinner nylon bristle in .005" diameter, for extra comfort and gentleness.
|
WHAT YOU DON'T NEED The mass market toothbrushes available today are typically longer, wider & more massive than POH toothbrushes. POH feels that this type of toothbrush imparts too much leverage & limits the dexterity required for effective cleaning of the teeth using the Bass Method of personal oral hygiene.
Nylon is tough stuff. If the bristles on a toothbrush are not end rounded and polished, it is possible that they can do damage. That is why we take extra care to polish the tips. You can look at your current toothbrush and see for yourself if they are polished or not.

We offer several widely spaced tuft layouts which allow the bristle tips to move more freely into areas often under-cleaned. This provides a deeper more effective cleaning for the most vulnerable areas of the dentition. In general, bristle tufts that are close together have a firmer feel than tufts spaced farther apart.

12/11 Barclay, St Petersburg FL - First got your product (floss) from a dentist. This is my second POH order.
12/11 Pauline, Elkins Park PA - I have just had braces put on. These disclosing tablets were recommended.
12/11 Sandra, Bladensburg, MD - POH brush does not irritate my tongue.
12/10 Cindy, Escondido CA - My doctor recommends this POH toothbrush, but was all out of them, so I tried on-line to see if I could purchase. I am very happy. This toothbrush works very well for me. [Purchased #6 TB]
12/9 Maurice, Holderness NH - My dentist handed me a roll in 1972 and I've been loyal user ever since. Nothing beats it!
12/9 George, Los Angeles CA - I have been a dental patient at University of Southern California Dental Clinic for 35 years. But starting in Nov 2013, I have to obtain a private dentist, because my teeth are in excellent condition. Yet, I found out about your floss at USC Dental Clinic Store, which is located in the basement of building and used only by dental students.
12/8 David, Coral Gables FL - I was instructed to purchase this particular floss per dentist recommendation.
12/8 Dr. Norman M., Mechanicsville VA - The only floss that cleans my teeth.
12/6 Teresa, Yuma AZ - Feliz navidad y muchas bendiciones para el proximo ano
12/6 Celeste, Nashua NH - Nothing works as well as POH! I've asked the stores to carry it and they said they have plenty of floss and POH was more expensive, so they don't stock it. I'm so impressed with it that I am willing to pay the extra.
12/4 Sonja, Ventura CA - My periodontist in CT always insisted on a POH toothbrush. Then I retired and moved to CA and no drug store had even heard about them. I had to use O--- - “super soft” and did permanent damage to my roots. Ouch! Finally, I Googled you and found a drug store quite far away. It took me 6 months to get there - no drivers license now. And then I found your website and here I am ordering.
12/4 Harold, Wooster OH - I have used your products for years and love them.
12/4 Dr. Lawrence P., Reading MA - Forth-two years ago, I was a young post Doc at Kansas State University. My spouse and I needed a dental check up. The dentist would only take us on as new patients if we promised to take a quick course in dental hygiene, which included our learning to floss and brush properly. He insisted we get the no-wax floss from POH, and we've been buying and using it ever since.
12/4 Carole, Floyds Knobs IN - I used this kind of dental floss, in my first encounter with a dental hygienist many years ago, I think around the early 70's. I was given a free spool each time I went to this dentist. This occurred in South Carolina. I moved home to Floyds Knobs, IN in '74. Last year, my dentist told me about you and I am so happy now to finally locate the kind of floss that I know is the best. Thanks!!!
12/3 Jeffrey, Cragsmoor NY - I have been using POH since my periodontist gave it to me decades ago. I cannot do without it!
12/2 Jeffrey, Minnetonka MN - I used to get your toothbrushes from my dentist but he stopped carrying POH and has another one that I've seen at T--g-t that I don't like. He gave me your website so I can order them for my self.
12/2 Susie, Tucson AZ - I Only use POH!
It is always amazing to POH to read what people say about our toothbrushes & floss. If you would like to read more, CLiCK

| On October 7, 2013, POH received the following from a patient: "Everything was great! My dentist used to have to "beg" me to floss my teeth, then he gave me some POH and the rest is history! I found it easy to use and didn't get stuck in-between my teeth. It was easy to use and the first few times I used it, it didn't make my gums inflamed. Now I use it every day! No fancy story, but just to say "thank you". Sheryl W.

POH dental floss conforms to the optimum specifications of dental floss for the Bass technique, and is a multi-filament, high tenacity nylon yarn spun at two Denier Per Filament.
POH offers three different total denier dental floss. Percept® 420 Black floss is the thinnest and has the least number of 2 DPF filaments. Classic White 490 is the original POH floss and the thickest is Percept® 630.
Wikipedia, the great table of contents to the Universe, has a good explainer on denier as a unit of measure. CLiCK.
Designed to dirupt and disorganize bacterial plaque.

To effectively clean between teeth, make sure you go subgingivally. Carrying the floss gently under the gumline with POH Percept® 420.
|
Percept® 420
Percept® 420 black dental floss is the thinnest floss we market. Percept® 420 slips easily between the tightest contacts. Besides being very thin overall, this black floss will clearly show a patient the amount of plaque being removed. Being black in color, this floss contrasts with plaque, thereby lending itself to a teachable moment. A great floss for those patients who are most skeptical of the need to floss. Also, Percept® will not show blood from debridement, which may lessen the alarm of some patients that are new to flossing. Percept® 420 black dental floss is constructed from six gathers of seventy denier total nylon, and these filaments are then twisted into one strand of strong floss. These multiple filaments work together to entrap and remove plaque, disrupting and disorganizing bacterial colonies. The result is effective personal oral hygiene for your patients.
Percept® 420 is available in NoWax™ or LiteWax™.
If you compare POH floss to the commercial, heavily marketed types of floss, all POH dental floss is considerably thinner. All POH floss is constructed with the 2 denier per filament specification required with the Bass Method.
All POH products are produced in Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA and conform to the original specifications of Charles Bass, MD.

| Everything you need in a toothbrush, and nothing you don't!
It’s been many years since someone bent the neck of a toothbrush, presumably to increase sales. After the bent neck came the thumb stop, then the multi-plastic handles, then a tongue cleaner, etc.
POH never took that route. POH does not do the “New & Improved!” thing every other year. We understand that the fundamental research upon which our designs are based is sound. POH will give your patients everything they need in a toothbrush, without the unnecessary, expensive bells and whistles.
Around 1960, with Dr. Bass' authorization, Robert G. Jones, DDS, our founder, went to the existing toothbrush manufacturers to see if they would make Dr. Bass’ type of toothbrush. Each company Dr. Jones approached turned him down flat, saying there was no customer demand, it would be an added expense, no, we will not make them.
Undaunted, Dr. Jones ended up starting POH to make both the floss and toothbrushes we market today. The same toothbrush and floss that Dr. Jones had been receiving directly from Dr. Bass.
POH - Our mission for more than fifty years is to help patients clean and keep their teeth.

Dr. Robert Jones (the founder of P.O.H.) first learned of Dr. Charles Bass in 1959. Dr. Jones left his practice in Tulsa to take an intense three week post-graduate course with Dr. Bass at Tulane University in New Orleans. After the three weeks, Dr. Jones was convinced of the validity of Dr. Bass' research and his method of personal oral hygiene. Dr. Jones promptly introduced the method into his practice, with immediate and positive results.
The results were certainly much more effective than anything he was doing to help his patients before Dr. Jones went to study with Dr. Bass.
In the decades since, thousands of preventive dental offices all over the world have seen first hand the benefits of the Bass Method in their patients.
Medicine, not marketing.

The Bass Method is more than a last flip of the toothbrush.

The use of disclosing agents upset preconceived notions about oral hygiene as was then understood. Among such: that fibrous foods cleaned teeth, the need to “brush in the direction teeth grow” and brushing the teeth after every meal. The studies began in 1949 and continued for fourteen years
Early agents were fuchsin red in a basic fuchsin solution. This proved to be an extremely messy way of using a disclosing agent. The first tablets were made with fuchsin, merbromin and neutral red. Then FDC Red #3, or erythrosin was used. Charles C. Bass inspired the idea of using disclosing agents to display where the colonies of bacteria are. The first preventive dentists were sometimes derisively called "The Pink Finger Gang" by their fellows.
“Disclosing agents are useful to patients as aids to learning how to clean their teeth effectively” Sumter S. Arnim, D.D.S.
Thank you for your insight, Dr. Arnim!
POH has been offering disclosing agents since our beginning.
